Scrambler Identification Numbers

Post by rbunyan4 » Mon Apr 12, 2010 10:01 pm

I just received a restored '66 305 Scrambler from Maryland and am preparing to register the bike at the Calif DMV. The engine serial number is clearly stamped on the transmission case and clearly visible. However, I understand that the vehicle identification number is supposed to be printed on a white tag attached to the wiring harness under the seat, next to the battery. Well, the tag is there but the first three numbers of the seven number series are smudged and not legible. The last four numbers are clear. Has anyone run into this issue and does anyone know if Honda actually stamped a VIN number anywhere on the frame? Incidentally, I'm told by AAA that if the DMV won't accept the VIN number, the fallback is that they can reissue a new VIN number.

The bike should be registered to the frame number that is on the neck.

Thanks very much, Kevin. The VIN stamping is made faint with the new repaint, but it's there!
