Hi everyone,
This is my first time on this site---I am glad I found it because I need help and who better to ask than the experts. First of all, about two years ago I completed a restoration on a 66 CL77 305 Scrambler so I kind of know my way around the bike---I said kind of. Well, about a month ago I purchased one that needs restoration and I am stuck on a couple of things that I didn't see on the last one. First of all, when I started taking the bike apart I noticed that the coils were different than what I have seen on others---they have a wrap around them--they are not the separate ones and aren't as long. Second, it doesn't have a main stand. Third, it has the slotted chain guard and is gray in color--others I have seen are black. I know the front fender is wrong as it is chrome and I believe aftermarket. I am hoping that I didn't get taken for a ride on this one when I purchased it--pardon the pun. Here are the frame and motor numbers--frame is CL77-1020129 and the motor is CL77E-1020369. I have Bill Silver's resto book and it says that the numbers usually are separated by 200 numbers or less---usually. Can someone help me out here and tell me if this is usual as far as the three things I mentioned?

Welcome and I hope I can help.
The numbers do show what is considered to be a bike issued in 1966 and the statement that 200 is as stated "usually" but is often more.
The chain guard is probably a replacement and the paint is likely HONDA primer.
If the coils are "resin cast" they also are probably replacements as HONDA did issue some of the last CL77 bikes with them and they were sold by dealers to replace the earlier issue.
All CL77's were issued with the center stand. ..............lm

Thanks for the reply---not sure what you mean by the statement on "usually" but is often more. I assumed the chain guard was a replacement---does it have any worth if sold so I can get the original somewhere else? Is the bike considered original if I use the "resin cast" coils. I am trying to get this done to original if possible. I figured it also was supposed to have the center stand--the guy I purchased it from had it 20+ years and said it had no center stand. Are they hard to obtain and honestly, I can't remember how they are attached. Lastly, is that aftermarket chrome fender worth anything to anyone? Crazy but I saw one on EBAY that went for over $500 the other day---that seems really substantial and I would guess not usual.

Goofy question---but how do I add a picture on here? I tried the attachment below---I hit browse, put the pic in there, and then clicked add attachment but it doesn't add.

I'm sure you can find a center stand on ebay for a reasonable price.
The chrome fender would only be stock if your bike was a 67. The last year of production
they produced some with chrome fenders and color tank and side covers. Candy blue and candy topaz orange. Other than that it could be from another cl.
For the pics, you are too large for the site to accept so you have to shrink them. Go to rants and rave section page 5 and follow Gun's tutorial on "How to downsize your pics for this forum". It's easy to do once you know how. Also I just learned that in My Pictures on windows you can crop,save for a really close-up shot and that will shrink it enough to transfer.

Hey, thanks for the reply. The fender is definitely an aftermarket as I have seen the 67's with the regular chrome one. My bike is a definite 66 and I need to find a fender and stay for it---not an easy find for sure. Fun fun.

Check Tim McDowlls site, he has reproduction fenders and stays. The chaingaurd you describe would be correct for a 65, and usually fetch good money on Ebay. The 66-67 non slotted generally sell for about half of the older ones. I wouldn't worry about the coils, they are pretty well hidden under the tank. The numbers can and do varry more than 200, so it should be considered a matching numbers bike.
