CL77 Restoration and a Big Hello to AllCL77 Restoration and a Big Hello to AllHi fellas, Gordon here and I wanted to say hello. I just picked-up an early example of a CL77 Scrambler. I had not planned on doing any more restorations for a while, but this one sort of fell in my lap and looks to be fun. I hope it won't be as difficult as the Bomber I did 2 years ago, but even that was fun. There will be lots of questions, be sure. I've ordered both of Bill Silver's books and a CD Rom copy of the factory manual and the Factory parts catalog. I know I need to study on those before I start making purchases.
I am not sure what I'm getting with the bokks ordered, but this bike has been with the owner I purchased it from since early 1967. It was used, but he is not sure if it's a 1965 or 1967. The frame number is CL77-100964x if anyone has some idea of the number made each year, that would be appreciated. If like the CB450 K0 though, those numbers from year to year were never published and the model year depended on the year sold. Anyway, I look forward to hanging out with you guys and in many months, may actually be able to start answering questions for new comers. Thanks, Gordon Gordon,
Good to see you over here on the H side. Nice choice of a fun restoration. I'm looking forwards to seeing this one come together in the usual immaculate way that you do your restos with impeccable attention to detail that you showed us on the GT750 build. I have had CB72's since back in the day, but only a few of them were restorations and on this board there are a bunch of people who are more versed in the details than I. In fact, I learned a bunch of things here that I never learned in all those years. Good place to hang out.
re:cl 77Gordon: The bike looks pretty good to me actually. You're off to a good start. Pretty complete too, from what I can see. You have excellent reference materials in Mr. Silver's books/CD, and also in this board. You will have a lot of fun here ! And this board is a great resource also. Does the engine turn over ? Do you have the exhaust ?
( My first motorcycle was a 1965 CL 77 bought in 1962. It was so clapped out that it would only do 50 mph flat out, but I didnt care because I didnt know. The speedo never worked.) 66 CB 77 76 BMW R75/6 99 GL 1500 trike 75 & 79 XS 650's Yes, it came with the exhaust, the carbs, filters, and side covers. It's all there except that I am missing the center stand, I have the wrong front fender, and I don't have the silencer piece that goes at the end of the exhaust. The engine is free, has oil and good compression - but the engine will be pulled apart and completely restored with the rest of the bike.
$300 and a local pick-up, so I don't have a lot into it...yet. Here is a pic once I got it home and washed off some of the dirt with a water hose. This is where it will reside for the next 6~12 months. Gordon
welcomeWelcome to our world. You have a wealth of info here and are in the right place to find it. Looking at the pics, I see early model cl. Single cam brakes and a small taillight show earlier model. Look at the wire harness near the switch and you should see a tag wrapped around it that will reveal the year of production if it has not been removed.
