no speed out of 305
no speed out of 305i just bought a 1965 honda superhawk with the 305 in it. i really dont know to much about motorcycles, but i want to learn how to work on them( i build hot rods for a living and i hear that the concept of bikes are the same as cars?) the bike has not been run in about 6 years. when i first bought the bike it wouldnt run. i took the covers off the side and the seat off and it was a wiring mess. i redid all the wiring and it looks really nice. and i got the bike running. but the problem is, is that the motor will not go faster than about 35 or 40 miles an hour. any ideas on what can cause that?
A-chappo, Well now I'm happy, another hot rod guy! Iv'e been in the same business for about 10 years now and a couple of years ago got to help on the N.S.R.A. giveaway car. Then I got the itch to have a bike like I had when I was a kid, a 1967 Super Hawk. So "move some cars over in the shop and make room"!! Still having fun. Even with the challange a 40 year old bike can present.
OK, lack of power on these is usually a fuel problem ie; carburators. Have you had your apart and cleaned them and set them up according to spec.? Im assuming you have a shop manual (I used to have a shop manual but I fired him) OK old joke. Also want to look inside the tank for rust, and don't forget to replace all fuel lines and clean out the petcock on the bottom of the tank. Once that stuff is alright go to the VJMC page and look at Ed Moores step by step method of setting up Ignition and timing,it works. So that should be a good starting point. Most important, get to know all you can about these things, get information! Good luck with the bike and keep us posted, some pictures would be good too. Steve (kustommusic) Greer
