CL77 engine base gasket surfaceCL77 engine base gasket surfaceboth sides of engine have sump at base of cylinder head front outer bolts for oil to drain to trans from top of engine. Mine ,I have have discovered during engine rebuild, have been filled in and machined with aluminum. Ever seen this? Are these sumps critical. Should I remove this material?
Re: CL77 engine base gasket surfaceWhat in the world do ya have there?
Most of these engines had the oil go up the feft and right front shafts to oil the total top end and that oil returned to the bottom by running down the center of all the top end parts. What ya got there?. ..............lm

Re: CL77 engine base gasket surfaceOK??????????????????. .............lm
As LM says - the oil is fed UP the left and right front studs to the valve gear. The return to the sump comes via the cam chain tunnel etc. So for your motor, has someone rigged up an external feed to the head? Otherwise the cams will run dry with disastrous results.

Right side is critical because some return oil is used to lube right main it appears.Left main gets oil directly from transmission.I don't know whos idea the solder was or what they were trying to. Engine had scored left cam and rocker arms. Maybe they were trying to increase oil pressure,I dont know! I found plugged rocker arm shafts on left.Repaired all that and cleaned out solder. Now I'm good as new.
