any harm done?

Post by deez » Fri Jan 08, 2010 1:49 pm

so to make a long story short the negative wire got disconnected from my battery while riding home. i continued to ride the bike around 10 blocks with it in this condition. i was concerned that this might have done some damage to something? any info would be appreciated.

deez,

In the time that you drove those 10 blocks your battery would not have been charging--that's no big deal. However, it would also not have acted as a capacitor in the charging circuit. This may have lead to a rather high charging circuit voltage which would probably have fried any lamps that would have been 'on' during that time. If none were 'on', I don't think your machine should have suffered any damage.

Check all your electrics before your next ride just to be sure.

thanks for the reply wilf. i forgot to mention that it did kill every light on my bike but i figured that the bulbs blew and would just replace. i was surprised that it killed my led brake light bulb though. my main concern was if it effected or damaged the rectifier?
thanks again wilf

I think if it ruined your rectifier you would not be able to measure a DC charging voltage at the positive battery terminal when the engine is running. This should be easy to check.

Deez, should be A OK. The battery wasn't charging for those 10 minutes, and eventually the bike might have died, but sounds all good to me. Remember to tighten those bolts, two turs past stripped, and back it off one!
