lurching in gearjust went out and messed with it some. there is a wirer holding the last plate in. not much help because i have no clue how to remove it. read on another post that the adjustment isn't right then left then right then an eight of an inch back left, but the opposite. tryed that, but that seemed way off. with all but the last clutch plate out, and in gear, i can spin the rear tire. doesn't this mean that the problem is that the clutch isn't releasing?
lurchingI think the ball bearing that's being talked about is in the clutch actuator.
If you take the side cover off that has the clutch cable, there will be a hole in the middle of the actuator that the clutch rod fits into. The ball bearing is deep inside the middle of the actuator. If you turn it over and shake the cover the ball bearing should fall out of there, if there is one. I had the same problem with my Dream (which was a basket case) and had no idea that the bearing even existed until I took it into my local motorcycle mechanic. Without that little bearing no amount of adjusting will work. Hope I explained it well enough. Good luck 66 Dream
78 Goldwing lurchingIt does sound like the clutch isn't releasing.
There are 3 adjustments on the clutch and they all have to be right for the clutch to work properly. Like I said these are difficult clutches to get right for amatuers like us. 66 Dream
78 Goldwing thanks mike. i finally got the wires out (I hope there not necessary, 'cause I don't think i can do that,) got the last plates out, cleaned them, put it back together, rear tire is still locked up with the clutch in. I can see the the plates expanding when the clutch lever is pulled, but maybe not enough? guess it's time to pull the right cover off.
lurchingDo you have the clutch cover installed when you are trying the clutch?
The clutch cover has to be in place for the clutch to operate. It's difficult for me to explain ,but the clutch rod actuator pushes the spring loaded shaft in the middle of the clutch pack up against the clutch cover which pushes the clutch pack apart. Maybe someone can explain it better. 66 Dream
