Apex muffler joints (CA77)

Post by brewsky » Tue Oct 13, 2009 5:16 am

Anyone found a good way to seal the connection with the stock header pipes?
The mufflers do not have a slit to tighten them with a clamp, and do not have enough clearance to slip some kind of packing in the joint even if a slit was cut.

Brewsky, stock mufflers had a high temp rubber ring that fit in the front of the muffler in a grove that sealed muffler to header pipe.

There is no groove available in this setup.
The mufflers slip over the pipes easily, but not enough room for a gasket between them.
Seems like every picture I've seen of these show black soot in front of the joint, and mine does also.
I'm toying with copper header gaskets to see if they they can be adapted.
Thanks

Brewsky, keep watching this post. If one of the experts sees it you'll get your answer.

Brew, any pics? Sounds like you have pattern mufflers. Apex don't have much of a reputation for their mufflers, I'm afraid!

Will get some pics as soon as I take them off.
I didn't learn of the quality issues until I had already ordered them.
They look ok at 20 feet, but the closer you get the less they impress.
I do like the overall look better than the other aftermarket alternatives I have seen and I can't complain about the price compared to OEM replacements.
The inexpensive MAC headers for my CB750 were much better quality and fit than these, however.
Anyway, I'm stuck with them for now and I've noticed quite a few other others who probably are too, judging from posted pics here and other sites.
Also, one hangs a little lower and wider than the other, but I will try to correct that at the same time.
