I will run the vent tube as per your description. And thanks for the link re: advancer springs. I ran across that a day or two after I posted (don't know how I missed it) and it seems to be exactly the situation I have. New springs are on the way because even if I was able to bend the hooks back I don't know how worn the springs are.
LM...the pdf index listing is: Disassembly and Assembly / 1. Engine (C72-77) / A. Engine Replacement. The Figures I was looking at are 8, 10, 12, 13, 15 and 16.
Thanks all,

Mystery Hole
I edited my previous message above. .....lm
LM...I believe you are correct on the tube going from the carb bowl over the engine and down between the engine and frame! That makes better sense than spilling fuel near the drive sprocket and kick shaft.
I think figures 12 and 13 show one tube coming down through the mystery hole (above the master link) and a second one coming through the hole under the starter cable/alternator cable hole. I'm thinking these are the two air vent tubes coming from the rear of the head as shown in figure 16. I'm thinking the mystery is pretty much solved....except for me not knowing the term, 'clams'. Thanks, Wilf
Wrong.
I'll answer when I have time. ...........lm
I'd never even noticed The Mystery Hole on CB before this topic was started. Now I just have to know (it's the OCD -- I fight it, and lose -- pretty much every day)! See the problems you've caused now, Wilf?
I was tinkering with the ol' girl yesterday, cleaning out the idle jets (it's been a bit petulant at traffic lights during the last few excursions) and just generally, well, tinkering. I fail to see how The Hole could be used at all on a CB, as it's virtually inaccessible with the valley cover in place. Mine doesn't have the aforementioned cutout at the front left corner, though. I also think that perhaps Soichiro could have paid better attention to detail on the CB upper crankcase, insisting that the threaded boss be removed - as yours has - before the valley cover was designed. Let's hold a seance and tell him!
Your top case is the same as the C/CA/CL72/77 case and were ya to build as many engines as HONDA did would ya actually make more than one design which fits all?
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. .......lm
Those 2 tubes actually go to the front of tha air cleaner and the air cleaner has 2 holes punched in it rather than the tubes which are on the front of the CB72/77 air cleaners.
The pics of the side case don't show anything comong through that hole. I've been involved with these engines since 1963 and NEVER found anything that HONDA put in it. It's just a hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. ......lm
