New Seat Cover - Only OK

Post by 48lesco » Thu Sep 10, 2009 3:55 pm

Needed a couple of CB77 seat covers, so I emailed "gumtwo" on ebay a couple of questions and he answered them and offered to work "off ebay" for a little less. Now, anytime I can spare myself or anyone else the indignity of ebay or paypal fees, I try to do so. Got the covers today, and I'm lukewarm... If anyone else is considering buying "gumtwo" seat covers, here's a couple of things you don't get from the ebay pictures or his answers to detailed questions:

There's no hem or reinforcing cord around the base of the cover, just a rough edge
Piping is a little too big
Two seams on each side instead of one in front (may be covered by the strap though)
Strap comes with it, but no hardware and its not sewn quite like the original

On the upside -
Size and shape look to be fairly accurate
Grain pattern and thickness are close to the original
Honda logo on the back looks accurate

I'm going to use them despite my slight dismay, and I'll post some pictures when they're done.

Now, about those chrome buckles... Anybody?????

For the price, it isn't a bad deal. I see they are going for about $50. Looking around I see a nice cover at Retro Bikes for $150 and this is without the strap.

From the picture on Ebay, it looks like the strap covers the seams. Not all had the seat buckles, the fold under over the edge and attach to a bolt on the under side. I have seen the buckles on Ebay in the past and I think they will cost you about what you paid for the cover.

I would like to see a picture when your done. I just repaired mine and I made the strap. I planned to pick up a cover some day, but this one seems to be holding up well.

Thanks for the replies - I have one of each of the seat pans, one that takes the wrap-around strap, and one that just has holes and uses the buckles on the outside. I would like to use the original style buckles though, the ones at siriuscon and retrobikes aren't like the originals, they look more like the ones on 350's etc. I think the wrap-around strap was used on later models, my '64 should have the buckles I think. I hate to think what the critics might say if I put the wrong kind of strap on my seat. I may get away with the wrong buckles if I take a blurry picture...
