empty bolt holes. what is missing?

Post by LittleRock » Sat Oct 08, 2005 6:42 pm

I am reassembling a 305 (for the 1st time) and just put the head on over the pistons and new rings. I haven't bolted it on yet because when I look into the crank between the cylinders in the space where the time chain travels, I see two empty bolt holes, one on the left and one on the right looking up at me. I have two manuals and neither give a good view of what is to go in these holes. It looks as is something could have bolted there which would sit in the center of the cam chain. I do not have any parts that came from there when I disassembled that I can find. I took severak pictures during disassembly but unfortunately, none of this area. Can any one tell me what goes there. If my description is not clear, I can try again.<br />Thanks, Terry

You should put the large rubber wheel that the chain runs on both sides of. ................LM

Thank youuuuuuuuuu! I just checked and found the rubber wheel with the two bolts in it. My next obstacle will be trying to understand the manual in installing the timing chain in the correct position with the upper and lower gears. You answer to my reply gives me great relief. I sure appreciate it.

See valve timing it is on the last page of this motors section. Also make sure that the correct valves are open, the crank shaft makes one revolution for two cam shaft revolutions. When i did this the first time I had flames coming out of the air intake when I started it up so be careful.
