CB77 exhaust baffles?

Post by Loudo » Sat May 23, 2009 3:48 pm

I have stock mufflers on my '63 CB77. The official shop manual in a section entitled "Construction of exhaust muffler" shows a diffuser pipe which is mounted inside the three "donuts" in the aft portion of the muffler and extends to the end of the muffler. I'm guessing this is what that hole in the very tip of the muffler is, a screw to secure the end of the diffuser. I don't have diffusers...when I look into the mufflers all I see are the donuts. Let's call this an informal poll...do the rest of y'all with these mufflers have diffusers? Did they generally rot out years ago and are either not readily available or is it fine to run the bike without them?

My bike is not really loud, compared to a Harley I suppose, but it's not real quiet either. Especially in the upper rev area, it sounds like I'm trying to get away from Mike Hailwood. I mean, catch up with him.

If I remember correctly, these are called baffles and they were held in with a short 10mm bolt. Back in the 60's we took them out to cut down on the back pressure and it did make the bike a little louder. As far as I know they are still available, I believe Loud Mouse said he had some. CliffC

I have them in my CB77. I ran it with them out, but prefered the sound level with them installed. You may try Tim McDowells site, as I know he does repro mufflers, and may have the baffles as well.
