kick start and right case cover

Post by thomas mchugh » Sun May 03, 2009 10:44 am

I'm new to ca77's and working without a manual. While replacing the carb, I dropped the 10 mm nut and it fell through a passage into the right case. I can't figure out how to remove the kick starter. Also, do I have to remove the elec starter to take off the right case cover? BTW, even with an impact driver, the screws wont come loose. It looks like I'll have to drill the heads off every one. If any one can give me ANY insight , I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks, Tom Mc

kick starter

Hi Tom,The whole side cover will come off including the kick starter. There is a shaft that the kick starter assembly slides onto inside that cover. You won't have to remove anything involving the electric starter.
Drilling all of the screw heads off worked great for me. Once the cover is off the remainder of the screws will come out very easily. Using an impact driver can cause damage.
I dropped that 10 mm nut from the carb afew times myself. I now plug that hole with a piece of rag whenever I work on the carbs.

kick starter/right cover

Tom,
before drilling off the screw heads, follow davomoto's suggestion which which worked for me with your same trouble. I sprayed them with WD40, let it sit awhile then sprayed them again and WAITED for a few hours. Then, with just the impact driver tip inserted into the screw, give an easy whack on the tip then try the impact driver. All of mine came out using that method. Save yourself some aggravation...I learned the hard way. I found that when replacing the side cover, hold the kick arm to about 10 or 11 o'clock (can't remember which) and it should end up in the proper location.

kick starter

Tom,I'd give the w-d 40 method a try first like Mike recommended. That may work great in Calif. but here in the rustbelt it's a different ball game. Usually the screw heads will deteriorated from rust and corrosion and are galled to the the case. I had no choice when I removed the screws from both of my Dreams.

Thanks for the info. I got the job done with great sucess. Unfortunately, I had already started to take apart the kickstart arm. What a chore to reassemble the thing with that spring loaded ball. I think I chase that ball around my garage floor for a couple of hours. Kinda like miniature bochy ball!
I found a few other pieces of hardware inside as well so it was kind of a good thing it happened. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
Thanks again, Tom
