CB77 oil pump drive gear reassembly

Post by hooptytank » Fri Apr 24, 2009 2:59 am

I need help reassembling the main drive gear on my oil pump.

I wanted to investigate the cause of metal flakes(think pearl brown) in my oil and isolate the cause of a clatter / grinding / banging noise that just started happening. I took the pump out to look for causes and a bunch of pieces just scattered, and I'm not sure how it goes back together.

I thought about duct tape and zip ties, but the oil will break them down

Can I find copper rivets?
maybe some JB weld?

On a serious note, has anyone seen this before? The pump itself rotated freely, the internal gears are perfect, nothing stuck in them. To me it looks as if something got stuck between the crank and pump gears, but I didn't find that piece. Thankfully the crank gear is OK.

I may have found the cause:

I noticed that the replacement pump I got has a wire mesh strainer, and another gasket, mine didn't.

Closer inspection of the shaft revealed galling and the bushing on the pump side was elongated in the direction away from the crank. The lack of the strainer and gasket brought the oil pump too close to the crank, creating an interference and something gave. Should have it back together soon and hopefully no damage occured to the top end.
