Swing arm bolt

Post by jleewebb » Sat Feb 28, 2009 11:50 am

I thought I'd share this pm from LM in response to recent pic on my restoration thread...I guess he didn't want to embarrass me by public posting, but I thought it was of some general interest:

"The swing arm bolt is installed from the wrong side. .................emo"

And my response: "Really? Clymer book shows it going from left to right, that's how it was when I took bike apart, that's how I reinstalled it. However, my owners manual shows it going right to left now that I look at it. Thanks, Lee"

It really amazes me how Ed can pick out tiny details like this from low-res photos we send in. What eyes!

Needless to say I removed bolt and replaced it from other side. it was easy enough, might as well get it right, even on this "rider."

It would be interesting to see what official shop manual shows, since Clymer illustrations appear to come from official Honda source. The wiring diagram in my owner's manual and the one in Clymer both misspell "battery" as "buttery" for example. Diagram in Silver book spells it "battery," otherwise no different. BTW none of these diagrams is exactly right for my bike, since all show a five wire light switch and mine had a burned out four wire switch. My new light switch is a five-wire, as is my "newer" dimmer switch (from a CL, but I made it work.) This is a long story, maybe I'll write it down sometime but not now.

Anyway, just goes to show that Clymer's not always right, but Emo always is... Lee

Hope this comes through good enuf to show what's what. It definitely shows bolt head with recessed grease fitting on right, jam nut on left.

I wonder how many bikes have swing arm bolt installed from left to right based on this illustration.

Well, well, well; my rear axle nut's on the right, too. And I'd never noticed!

From a functional standpoint, does it make a difference which way the swing-arm bolt is installed?

I think it's just a "gotcha" for those of us obsessed with getting things just right. But what do I know? As I said before, it would be interesting to see what official shop manual shows, since Clymer illustrations appear to come from official Honda source. --Lee

Some wonder how I see simple things such as the SA bolt. Installation of parts like this example are ingrained in my memory because I've had my hands on/seen so many of these bikes since 1962 and know to look at certain parts which are most commonly installed incorrectly. To some folks little (if that's what ya call it) things like this bolt installation aren't of any concern to them. Functionally there is no consequence it's just "do ya want the bike correct or not". There are other parts (oil filter washer) which if installed on the wrong end of the filter shaft can/will cause terminal damage. ........................lm

What bike is my swing arm bolt off of?

Post by Adam Tucker » Wed Apr 08, 2009 5:49 pm

Sorry this is a bit off subject, but I wondering what model 305's used a swing arm bolt which had oil zerks on both ends of the bolt. I first realized that I didn't have the correct bolt for my 67 Cl77, when the nut for the bolt barely caught 2 threads. I did get the correct bolt for my bike off ebay, but I am curious as to which model years used the shorter double zerked bolt.

Thanks
Adam
