CP77 Restoration - First Timer
Speedo looks like it's from a 1962, no high beam indicator? Tank badges are later replacements, origionals are plastic. Carbs appear to have the rounded float bowls used through early 64 if I'm not mistaken. Appearently some things have been mixed and matched over the years, not uncommon at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some mixed up parts. The seller had another superhawk and a black bomber. I think he took them apart years ago and never finished them, and his wife wanted them gone. I think he still has the other two bikes in pieces. I think if this project goes ok I'll try and get me hands on that bomber. Don't tell my wife though:)
Lower Casing - Painting?I've been wondering what to do with the lower engine. I've been researching all the paint colors and I don't think I will paint the head and cylinder block. It looks pretty good just blasted. Is the lower casing usually painted. I'm interested in what others have done. I'm not going to split the casing. I'm also worried about blasting the lower half and getting sand inside. Anyone have any thoughts?

Questions? Help! Cleaning/Gasket/Masking etcWell I finally feel like I've accomplished something. I finally got my free sandblast cabinet. It wasn't big enough and didn't work. So I had to go out and purchase a new cabinet. It was $150 I could have spent on parts, but I guess my piston order will have to wait until next payday.
After a few small test pieces I masked off the cylinder and blasted it. I soon realized the extra cash I forked out for the blast cabinet was well worth it. The results were great and bitter sweet when I think about the hours I had spent scrubbing the block with brushes and solvents. I have some questions I'm hoping someone can answer. 1. I have been masking off the gasket surfaces on the pieces I am blasting. I'm assuming it is not safe to blast these surfaces. Am I correct. I'm using glass beads as my medium. 2. How clean do the gasket surfaces have to be. I am having trouble getting them as clean as I would like. I've included a picture. There is still some "clouding" on some of the surface areas but I can't feel anything when I run my hand over the area. I've been using gasket remover and a brush to remove the gasket. I'm guessing you're all going to tell me to put some more elbow grease into it:) 3. I've been finding some "surprises" that previous service men have left me. The oil drain plug is perfectly round. One thing that concerns me is the head gasket. The surface looks a little ruff and is obvious someone scrapped a gasket off with little care for the surface. I am wondering if it is recommended to resurface this area. There didn't seem to be much of a leak at this site before I disassembled the motor. 4. How do you clean the valve seat area/dome on the bottom of head. (Sorry don't know the tech term:). Is it even necassary to clean this area?
Re: Questions? Help! Cleaning/Gasket/Masking etcThe top of the cylinder assy looks good to me. Looks as though you may be using SHARP MEDIA. Put a spot of oil on a Blasted area and observe if the oil penetrates the aluminum. If it does ya better change to ROUND MEDIA. I have extra exhaust valves (smaller head than intake) and I put them in with the head at the spring end of the guide. This way I can ROUND MEDIA blast the ports. I also put screws/bolts in any threaded hole. ...............lm
