seal questions

Post by Mike Mullins » Sun Mar 01, 2009 9:27 pm

I am at the point of almost having the engine CLEAN. Now I am going to replace the seals as well as the gaskets. All the seals in the engine are type SC. I can get the seals in the proper size from an industrial supplier, but they may not all be type SC. Rating for the other type seals (mainly TC, which looks to be of very similar cross section) are the same- pressure at 3lbs/in2 and speed at 3600 ft/min. As long as I have the proper size seal, can I use the TC type seals instead of the SC type ? By the way, I have no idea if these seals are original. I doubt it since I find the head has apparently been milled. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mike Mullins

I don't see why a TC seal wouldn't work. The only difference is that it has an extra wiper blade which would only improve sealing. The O.D., I.D. and width must be the same as the original TC seal.

Thanks for the info. I came to the same conclusion after checking several other sites and getting some diagrams on type of seals. I also emailed one of my old high school buddies who is a machinist who builds steel slitting machines. He came to the same conclusion. He did add a caution on making sure the materials were up to the temperatures involved ( I think they will be.) I have my list and have checked with a local bearing and seal house, and will be ordering them soon.
Thanks again
Mike
