66 Honda 305 - Putting the cam back together

Post by young4vr » Mon Feb 23, 2009 8:13 am

I have my engine apart and got the cam out. Now I am working on trying to get it back together, the cam. Does anyone have a method of getting it back together, I am having a hard time getting everything lined back up to get it to fit.

Thanks

I place the sprocket into the head after I have driven the shafts into both holes but not far enough to engage the sprocket.
I them align the L/S cam splines and drive the cam into the sprocket. Using vise grip pliers I hold the sprocket and tighten the nut.
I now align the splines of the points side and also align the line on the end of the points cam to the marks on the sprocket and slowly/carefully drive the cam into the sprocket. (twisting the points cam back and forth until I feel it engage the locater inside the sprocket)
I then (still have vise grips on sprocket) drive the cam home and tighten the locking nut. Be sure the bearings are as far into the cam assy when ya lock the parts down. (both nuts).
I use a brass hammer!!!! .............lm

Double guessing myself now

Post by young4vr » Wed Feb 25, 2009 9:08 am

Got it all back together, but now I am wondering if I put it together backwards. If I am facing the exhaust, do the points go on the right or left. The reason I am asking is because when I put the rocker arms and pins back in, it seemed like I had to switch them to get them back in.

Points to the right side and the cam followers are not position sensitive. ......................lm
