air outlets

Post by dreaming56 » Mon Jan 26, 2009 1:25 pm

good day,
I was telling you that I was redoing the engine on my 305 and I have a question (probably stupid). There are 2 ports on the head that have attachments for a hose, like a gas line hose. When I got the bike there was nothing attached to these and for the life of me I can't think what they are for or where they go. Can someone clear this up for me?
Thanks Stan,

hoses

One of the great Honda mysteries LOL. I don't know what they do either but I know they discontinued them on late models.

They are intake guide vents, and Honda did discontinue them on the later models. The generally run to a T, and then to a nipple on the aircleaner, on CB and CLs, not sure where they go on a Dream.

vents

I think you're talking about breather vents intended to remove moisture and discontinued on later models. They hooked together with a tee and then to a spigot on one air cleaner. Later air cleaners don't have spigots. Most usual alternative seems to be just hooking them together with a short length of tubing. There's been lots of discussion about this here on forum, try searching for "vent" I suppose. LM has answered at length and in detail on several occassions.

Yes I'm still a bit in the dark about them too. I caught heck from the powers that be when I changed my CB77's air filters to K&N's, but didn't vent the tubes into a filter. I did eventually vent them to a small aftermarket crankcase breather filter. BUT, if there isn't any vacuum present in these hoses, what difference does it make if they vent to a filter or not? Doesn't 'vent' mean air going out, as opposed to 'vacuum', which would be air coming in?

I don't like the sound of having the tubes loop into one another -- then there's no venting. But I'm no mechanic, so I could be wrong...

Thanks for all the feedback, I tried the search without much luck. Talk about your honda mysteries, I talked to a bike mechanic the other day and he said they might be crankcase vents but without seeing them he wasn't sure. I'll keep on digging and I'm sure this has been asked before, any input would be appreciated,
Stan

VINCE I told ya that they don't actually do anything/matter because HONDA discontinued them with the 1967 engines (all) so a simple (no real cost fix) was to take (ONE) piece of tubing and connect both. Ya spent $$$$$$ for no good reason and now admit ya aren't a mechanic. I thank you for that. But ya did spend $ for nothing more than something that your bike has that others don't. If one doesn't want to install a tube between them then ya can plug the holes with something or leave them open because ya won't effect anything that matters. .................LM
