Look for voltage on the back of the combo switch inside the headlamp, terminal 'BAT' (red wire).
If yes, then turn the key on and check terminal 'IG' (light green/red); if no, check the 15A fise near the battery +ve post. EDIT: IG wires are black and black with a white sleeve! Lt gn/red is neutral lamp switch wire.

Thanks Taylor and Steve for your responses. I am just starting to get my head around this electrical stuff, and unfortunately, your diagrams and acronyms and shorthand are greek to me. BUT fortunately I have a patient friend who will be helping me who does understand the language. Until I can get my friend over, im gonna keep trying. Steve, can you tell me if I have cracked your code language correctly. I assume that the "combo switch" you speak of is the one that the key goes in? And 'terminal BAT' is the battery terminal with the red wire? Also, the only green wire coming out of the 'combo' switch is all green and seems to go to handlebar (horn and highbeam?) Sorry chum, lt grn/red means a base colour of light green with a red tracer (sometimes called a binary or secondary colour or stripe). I can't find my wiring diagrams, as I'm in the process of moving apartment, but I think the ignition circuit wire on a C/CA is lt grn/r; I've posted both CB and CA digrams on the forum before now, so I'll look back.
Initially you're looking for voltage at the combination switch (ignition/light switch) on the terminal marked BAT or with a red mark. It should have a red wire from the battery and via the 15-Amp fuse. Using a logical process of elimination, if you have voltage there but not at terminal IG (ignition) with the key 'on', then the combo switch may be faulty; if you have NO voltage at BAT, then the fuse close to the +ve (positive) battery terminal has probably blown or is intermittently discontinuous due to corrosion or a bad connection. Off you go..... EDIT: Sorry, hold that wire colour! That's the neutral lamp wire from the neutral switch. Christ knows where I got that from, as I know that's the colour for neutral on a CB! Term BA, battery, red Term HL, headlamp switch, green Term TL, parking lights, white Term IG, (ignition system) & key-on circuit, black & black with white sleeve Term CH, charging from rectifier (celenium diode pack) white/red EDIT: this is a CB keyswitch; here's the Touring models' combo switch: Term BAT, battery, red Term DY, dynamo (links to SE for lights-on boost), pink Term SE, rectifier (links to DY for lights-on boost), yellow Term ML, meter lamp, brown Term HL, headlamp switch, green Term TL, parking lights, blk/y Term ST, starter solenoid feed, blk/red Term IG, (ignition system) & key-on circuit, black & black with white sleeve
