which front forks?

how do i tell which front forks my 65 superhawk has? i need to do a fluid swap and have to get the right type and level. thanks

The early ones have steel sliders (yours should be) and the late ones are aluminum. ......lm

forgive me for my lack of knowledge, what are the sliders. and also do you happen to know the type and amount of oil to put in just for a drain and refill?

I have the answers to any questions ya ask for this bike. I learned them as I worked on my bikes and acquired parts books and manuals. When I started the computer wasn't even a word and I became knowledgeable of many machines (bikes/cars) with not much more than effort by myself. TIS ABOUT TIME YA GET DID MORE THAN ASK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. ........LM

I am not quite sure how to take this. Are you saying to just try to figure out the type and amount of fluid i need by trial and error? I am definitely doing all of this myself w/ the help of members of this board. It seems maybe when you started to working on the bikes that the manuals and parts books were more readily available? I am definitely not trying to bash you in any way. You seem to be the most knowledgable person on this forum about these bikes. This is my first bike "semi restore" and on a limited budget is is sometimes hard to just try different things and parts w/o knowing if they are going to work right. I am a member of a few other forums and they happen to be in the way of the fields that i know a thing or two about and i help as many people as i can, just as you do. I ask questions not to have someone do the work for me but to double check what i have tried to learn/read/figure out myself. Just to let you see i am trying to do this, here is a picture of what i have so far. i have taken it the rest of the way apart and have it masked at this time, ready to shoot the frame

Great response. The crux of my previous message was to get your attention and a response from you other just questions. Now that I have your attention I recommend you go to others or eBay and "get parts books and manuals" which are available and read and study the pics. Actually I didn't have a parts book or manual for the CB/CL72/77 HONDAS until 1985 but I worked on my 2 CL72 HONDAS with limited tools and lots of hope (1963 to 1966) I was doing thing correctly because I couldn't afford shop repair costs. (I raced MC's from 1971 to 1978 and the first thing I bought after I got a new race bike was parts book and manual) Now if you have the early (1961/1965) issue you will have Steel Sliders. (the parts which Slide up and Down on the fork tubes) If you took them off the tubes you need to replace the 7.6 OZ. of (I use 30W Non Detergent engine oil) fluid. If you drained the Sliders replace with 7.1OZ. If yours are aluminum replace with 6.3 OZ if you took them off the tubes but if you drained them replace with 6.3 OZ. Now get them books feller. ..................lm

i did check and mine are steel. I just took off the top bolt, the big one on top of the forks and i set them upsidedown to let them drain a couple of days. I will take your reccomendation and get the 30w nondetergent motor oil or the replacement.
