Take a short length of heavyish cable -- 4mm/sq - 6mm/sq -- strip about 5mm of insulation from each end, peel back the protective caps from the big pair of studs on the solenoid and short the studs together by firmly pressing the bared ends of said cable onto said studs. The starter should spin.
If it doesn't and there's no sparking from your bit of cable:
  • a) the starter motor's shagged or
    b) the battery's dead flat or
    c) the engine earthing strap is missing or discontinuous or
    d) the battery / solenoid / starter terminals have a resistance and should be stripped & cleaned
If it doesn't but there's a degree of sparking:
  • e) the starter motor's shagged or
    f) the battery's got poor capacity and should be charged or replaced, or
    g) the engine earthing strap is missing or discontinuous, or
    h) the battery / solenoid / starter terminals have a resistance and should be stripped & cleaned
If it does spin, then:
  • g) the solenoid is probably shagged
Note: for the purposes of this little test the position of the key is immaterial, as the battery voltage is constantly present at one of the solenoid terminals; besides the ignition and other key-on systems, the keyswitch merely isolates the 12V to the solenoid actuation coil -- pressing the starter button completes the circuit to the coil by presenting a 'ground', 'earth' or 0V, whichever you prefer to call it.

By the starter selinoid do you mean what some refer to as the starter relay aka the ignition module by some?? The round unit mounted just below and right of the ignition coil with two bolt connections? If so I tested it with a digital multimeter yeterday and got no voltage reading on either connection. Phil actual had me over and showed me where he tests his and how one connection will read with no power and one when the starter button is pushed. I also replaced my ignition coil, spark plug wires, and wire to plug caps yesterday as well. THANKS PHIL!!!
My question now is anyone know where I can get a replacement? I don't see one available on Ohio Cyclery, Ebay, or old Bike Barn. Although I hope they make some sort universal replacements I'm not sure what specifications I need to be looking for.

Anyone??? I'm at a loss here...already tried one from Farm and Fleet's small engine area with no new results except for voltage is present with a multimeter test.

Brew, I have rebuil / cleaned up the starter relays. Remove from bike, disassemble the unit, and sand the contact points. reassemble, and it should work fine. To test starter, hook up a jumper, or jumper cables, black to chasis ground, red to lug on starter. If starter is O.K. it will turn over.

I just did your jump the starter test and yes the starter cranks over fine. Thanks for the tip! Do you have the ability to add some pics of your starter relay contact points? I just opened mine up and the copper contact points looks clean as a whistle.

I dont have one apart now. The last one I did looked clean as well, but didn't work. Go ahead and sand the contacts and coat with dilectric grease if you have it, and reassemble. It's worked a couple of times for me.

EXCUSE THE FACT THAT SOME ISSUES IN THIS REPLY ARE UNRELATED TO ORIGINAL POST: I just don't know if starting a new thread for each is prudent to helping me resolve my issues..
Ok I cleaned the starter relay and nothing new still a click. Purchased a new replacement w/ fuse from old bike barn and still same result. I still am able to jump the start and get it to turn over but has not fired up yet nothing on a kick start either.
I just got my carb back from my friend who is a jeweler and he ultra sonically cleaned it and installed a new keyster carb kit. Damn thing looked like a jewel, or as if it just came out of a box brand new, when I got it back (seriously).
Now I have kream coated my tank and reinstalled my petcock with relatively new seals, about a year old but no gas exposure, but petcock is leaking miserably.
After I installed the carb the throttle does not seem to have the right spring and or turn radius reponse. Could be just my stupidity and lack of motorcycle carb knowledge.
I do have a replacement condenser (courtesy of milwaukephil) but it it does not have the right wiring connections or wiring length or color so I'm scared to do in improper wiring hack job and screw up ignition worse with an improper install. Could this be a roadblock to the bike firing?
Anyhow any help on this mess of issues will be greatly appreciated as after 3 years of working on this Dream I'm about to throw in the towel, sell it, and buy a CL360 my friend is offering me for a steal.
I just hate to do that after I have invested so much time and energy and many of my old a new friends have helped along the way.
see below whole mess of pics
