Starter button/switch questions I get a click....CA77

Post by BrewCityDream » Wed Jul 16, 2008 2:20 pm

So I have a 64 CA77 305 Dream and recently installed a new wiring harness and then had the starter rebuilt and just reinstalled it. When I push my starter button with key in position III all I get is a click. I opened up the button assembly and saw one yellow wire connected to it. Is there supposed to be a gray one connected as well? just guessing according to wiring daigrams and friends suggestion?? Also do these starters really connect with only one black wire? Any other thoughts on why the starter won't crank over?

were you having a problem with the starter that lead to the rebuild? battery fully charged?
i believe with the negative ground yes, only 1 wire to button and 1 to starter.
if you hear a click every time it means the button is working and doing something
can put a multimeter to the starter and see what kinda voltage it's getting

My bike has never started using the electric start and has only ran for a few breif seconds after many long hard kick start sessions. After I re-did the wiring harness I got a click. So at that point I just pulled the starter and took it to my local electrical motor rebuild shop for a bench test and they suggested it needed a rebuild. I trust their work whole heartedly as I have gotten many other old starters and generators rebuilt by them before. When I brought it home and put it back on the bike and reconnected the fully charged battery same click. Nothing new. Would I check the multimeter readings at the starter when the button is being pushed or just when the key is in start position?

Brew City, If you are hearing a click type noise then the starter button is good. Using a meter you should find battery voltage at the lug on the starter when you press the button. If not, and I'm guessing "not" You will have to follow the starter cable back to the start solenoid and check with your meter both sides of the solenoid(the large lugs). The battery side should be battery voltage all the time and the starter side should show battery voltage when the start button is pushed and 0 volts when not pushing the button. The starter button is only one wire, yellow. It provides a ground to the solenoid to cause batt voltage to go to the starter when you push the button. Good luck! Kustommusic
