Worn Kickstart Shaft

Post by Phil-UK » Sun May 04, 2008 2:27 pm

Hi

My CB72 has just succumbed to the worn kickstart shaft problem, leaving the kickstart trying to
rotate with the gears and I don't have time to pull the engine and replace it before heading to France on it.
I have 2 questions I'm hoping people can help with:-

1. I'm planning to remove the kickstart gears from the R/H cover and rely on the electric starter
or bump start it ... anyone aware of any problems with this ?

2. Has anyone developed a proper engineering solution to this ? Is there a needle roller that can
be made to fit ( if necessary by a proper machine shop rather than my amateur attempts with a
lathe ) ? I've got an unworn shaft but was saving that for a 305, and presumably it will eventually
do the same thing again.

Any advice/thoughts welcome,

cheers

Phil ( Sussex, England )

don't remove the gears and spring from the rh cover, these are needed to hold the kickstart wratched in its stowed position inside the gearbox
otherwise the kickstart wratched will wearout rapidly

Hi Fred

Thanks for the input .. I haven't removed the gears and will see how things go.
If anything starts to move then I may take the kickstart pedal off.

thanks

Phil
