Replacing crankshaft oil seal(s!)

Post by e3steve » Wed Apr 16, 2008 6:30 pm

OK, how may of us have been caught out with this one? Order individual seals for the rhs of the bottom end from the online fiche only to find that, upon removing the rotor, there's another bloody seal hiding inside the starter chain sprocket! AND it's the one that's causing the leak!!

This particular critter (91208-259-000) 'works' hard at keeping the lubricant inside the engine; it's the one taking most of the stress during running as, once the motor's been started, the big bugger in the crankcase can take the rest of the day off because the sprocket remains static. The crank then spins, quite quickly sometimes, within the smaller aforesaid-numbered seal which is probably something in the region of half the actual working circumference of the biggie (91201-259-000) and which probably, therefore, does literally millions of times more 'work'.

The moral of my fable herewith is: don't forget to also look at the fiche page that covers the alternator & starter, because that's where the clever tw@t wot compiled the parts list has hidden the real 'worker' (and, in most cases, I suspect, the source of the leak from here). Another weekend that I don't get to ride CB, as I have had to order the additional seal!

Be warned, advised and, consequently, informed!

NB: The sprocket, I've found, doesn't necessarily actually 'remain static' as in my previous thoughts herewith; it can be stopped by hand though and, depending upon the resistance offered by the larger seal, does turn slower than the crank at times. When all's said and done, the smaller seal's inner circumference is more stressed than that of the larger one.

Sorry, the physicist in me just has to find an explanation for these things! You're glazing-over there........

Hello, I'm currently restoring 2 superhawks, do you mind telling me where you order the seals from? I've found all but 1 seal on bike bandit for my cl77's. Thanks for the help. 305 nutt If anyone ever needs any internal engine parts for the cb,cl 77 I have several engines apart that I will be selling.

Hey nutt, Western Hills Honda have some stuff, and the online fiche is easy to navigate once you get the hang of it. http://www.westernhillshondayamaha.com/ ... &year=1966
Each model appears to be listed relevant to its year of being first manufactured, so you have to trawl through the YEAR drop-down to find your model.

Ed Denier is parts manager, very helpful and usually responds quite quickly to emails.

Regards guys,

Steve
