Top-end clatter
Top-end clatterFellow enthusiasts,
Firstly, my thanks to lm for all his knowledgable help; I'm sure there are other advisors who have attained God Status so I'm putting this post out for them (or anyone who has achieved the rank of Archangel and is seeking promotion). I recently acquired a lovely little CB77 rider which I'm playing with using spanners & sockets. It has a degree of top-end clatter, but only on a feathered throttle; i.e. on engine overrun or when accelerating (hard) there's no rattle at all. Give it some light acceleration and the rattle is ever-present. I reckon it's worn carb-slides chattering (it's showing 30k miles). Apart from this and some oil finding its way down and dripping from the forward-end crankcase studs, the motor's as sweet as a sweet thing. Can anyone chime in with a similar experience and, hopefully, a remedy? Also, please take a look at my WANTED posts in the Classifieds - I'm in need of some stuff to complete my pre-summer project. Oil leaks out of the forward studs could be lack of sealing washers. I believe they are made of copper and are meant to keep oil from leaking out of the space between the stud and the valve cover hole. I know Ohio Cycle has them, Not sure if Honda still has them available....Anyone? Gary '65 CL77 Owner
Re: ChatterThanks for the info, Gary. Ohio Cycle is a bit of a pain in the chuff to deal with for me, as they don't take credit card orders. I may try Western Hills; I'm building a bit of a list with them and they have a proper online ordering system (as do cmsnl.com, but they don't have as much in stock). My problem, here in Spain, is that the authorities love to hit us for import duty for US-sourced stuff. I may also have a word with one of my marine hydraulics contacts and pinch some Doughty washers (the metal-lastic type) to try. I'm dropping the motor for general inspection / refurb / kickstart problem (AND x-ing the gears, now I know what that is!) around October, but I'd really like the Spring & Summer riding to be leak-free which, embarrassingly, it isn't right now.... Although most of us are enthusiasts due to nostalgia and play with our bikes because we can, I think the attached print says it all! Regards guys, Steve
Just to append, it looks like my most serious oil leak is from the crank seal; I took the right c-case cove of today to rebuild the neutral switch (a success, so if anyone wants to save buying one, ask me for my method) - the stator trough had about a centimetre of oil laying there!
I've also noticed that the cylinder head gasket has been bogged with what looks like black Sikaflex sealant and there is evidence of a smidgen of oil down the front barrel fins, leaving a small deposit on the starter pinion cover. Ah, well, better drop the motor before the Spring and fix that! As an aside, I'm also Heli-coiling every alloy thread that I can get at; I've found 4 stripped threads so far, so let's not sod about.... The cost of a stainless Heli-coil kit far outweighs the bloody hassle when another (inaccssible) thread strips out!! Steve PS: I'd almost forgotten what it's like to have oily fingernails (arf!).
