Drilling CL 72 crank for a stater clutch

Post by Kthomas55 » Sat Apr 13, 2019 5:21 pm

I saw one thread that referred to doing this but it was somewhat vague. Can this be done successfully without dismantling the crank ? If so, how would you remove the swarf from drilling ? I have screwed up and installed a cl crankshaft . It was the best one I had and didn’t know about the hole until I ran across a former thread

I planned to do this but didn't need to in the end.

I'm not sure that the hole in the inner side of the crank web is deep enough but I can check.

For drilling I bought some Artu 2mm drills. http://www.artu.com

To minimise swarf into the engine you could use a vacuum cleaner as you are drilling and drill upside-down. It might be better to pull off the bottom case and perform the opertionwith the crank accessible.

Good luck!

Did you happen to check to see if it was deep enough ?
Thanks

I just checked four different CL72 crankshafts that are apart and yes they are all drilled deep enough. I would uses some grease on the drill bit to collect the chips then vacuum out hole.

Thank You
As soon as I get some decent drill bits I’ll let you know how it turns out

Drilling crank

I ordered bits from my local Fastenal. The just barely made a dent. They said the next price up was 30+ dollars apiece for a 2mm bit. I’m either going to try one more time by ordering some bits or buy another crank. These were cobalt bits.
