I am not smart enough to get the camshaft out

Post by GalvaSuperhawk » Mon May 28, 2012 3:32 pm

Hello all,
I tried to follow Bill Silvers manual and my shop manual. I have also looked on the forum for help but I still don't understand how to get this camshaft out. I take it that for the right side all I have to do is knock.the second bearing out. Is that right? As for the left side, how do I get the cam sprocket off of there? Should I knock it all back in to place, put that nut back on the end of the shaft and tap on it until some.how that frees the cam sprocket? That is what I'm understanding from the posts on here but since I am of below a average intelligence and those posts don't have pictures I do not understand. Unfortunately it says my picture is too large to post. Basically my camshaft is in two pieces stuck in the motor. I have the right side shaft out, after removing the circlip. I.still have to knock the inner bearing out. The left side is also stuck in the head. I have already driven the outer bearing out but the cam sprocket is still attached and I don't understand how to.remove it.
Thanks

The nut pulls the tapered end of the bolt into the end of the cam, tightening it in the sprocket. Put the nut back on, flush with the end of the bolt and tap on it to release the taper. Support the cam sprocket with wedges or shims, between the sprocket and opening in the head, and drive the cam out of it. Use a brass drift against the inner bearing races or the side of the cam lobes to move it. Some times it helps to keep the outer ball bearing in place, to keep things in line, when driving out the cams.
Almost forgot, you need to slack off the big nut, on the center of the cam sprocket, to release the cam on the opposite side.

Thanks Mike. Should this topic arise for anyone else I found this thread to be the most helpful http://www.honda305.com/forums/1965-sup ... 695-7.html
