Newbie in need of help

Post by jvmills » Wed Mar 28, 2012 2:14 pm

Recent purchase of a 65 cl72. claimed to be running. I haven't been able to get started. While trying to kickstart felt a sudden change. Became easier to kick. Original thought was something in kickstart or clutch (stuck disengaged because I was playing with the clutch lever about that time). Just did a compression check found to be 50 psi on left and just under 40 psi on right. I know these are low and won't run like this. Shop manual says to check valve tappet clearance. I don't think this is the problem. don't have the tools to do a leakdown test and not sure how to do. will check forum on that. Open to suggestions how to proceed from here.

Always adjust the valves first, it's common for the clearances to close up over time. Compression figures on an engine that has been setting for a while won't mean too much. Change oil, get it running and put a few miles on it, then check the compression.

couldn't get it to run or even sputter, even with starter fluid. have spark, set timing and smell gas on plugs. rechecked compression and tightened fittings better 100psi on left 95 on right.

Clean the carburetors, get some new spark plugs, 95 psi is enough to run on.

+1 on the new plugs as the ones your trying to use are most likely fouled. Get yourself a few sets while your at it and a gapper if ya don't have one. Also-make sure your battery is charged.

Thanks for your replies. had changed plugs, old ones had dry black junk on em. Points look ok. set per Ed's directons. Carbs are off the bike now. Have Keyster rebiuld kits for them. Will look to that next. Have read of problems with them in the forum though. Will probably use the gasket only. The left was leaking gas. Will also clean/rebuild the petcock, it leaks too. Some minor rust in the tank. Have fuel filters to install till I can deal with that. Right intake rocker has some play in it the others don't seem to have. will set them as well. Have new condenser and points. Will try as well. Spark still seems weak to me. Battery is new and charged. Will be next week before I can get back to it. Starting my work week today. 4 12 hour shifts evenings then nights. It will be at least Tuesday before I can get this done and will post update when complete.
