I did my first oil change today. Didn't go as well as I hoped. Went for a ride to warm up the engine and on the way back, I hear something snap when I shifted from 2nd down to first to pull into my driveway and couldn't get it out of first gear. I drained the oil and took off the cover to clean the filter and noticed it was kind of lopsided. I took off the crank case cover (after almost stripping all the screws, but finally got them off-don't think I can reuse them). The chain was off the oil rotor. I hope that's what I heard. Don't know why it would come off. I cleaned it all, put everything back on temporarily and ordered a new crank case gasket . I also want to get all new screws. Are these something I can get from a hardware store or are they going to be special order screws? If I get all the sizes from the parts book, do you think Home Depot or my local nuts/bolts store would have them?

Hi - I guess we're talking about the LEFT crankcase cover right?:) Anyway, you can but 6mm screws at Home Depot but the pan heads will be a little larger than the originals and might not be high strength. I order screws from Honda. They still supply all of the lengths you need and they aren't very expensive. Use a combination of the parts book info, what length was in each hole when you took them out, and common sense to determine what lengths you need.

I think the bigger issue here is the oil slinger chain coming off. I would replace the chain for sure, and make sure the washer on the slinger shaft is in the right place (between the front of the filter and the pin in the shaft). Also check both sprockets to be sure there's no damage and that the one on the crankshaft is installed properly (although that would be pretty hard to screw up). Look for any reason they might be misaligned.

Now, as to not being able to get out of first gear after you stop; well, welcome to the club!

I went to a few places and no one had the screws so I'm going to take your suggestion and just order them from Honda. I'm going to pick up some for the right side cover while I'm there as well. I'm sure I'll have the same problem there too. I checked the chain and the sprokets and they looked OK. Maybe I did something when I pulled out the oil filter. The washer is in the correct place and now I just have to put it all back together, fill it with some oil and see what happens. But what is this about not being able to get out of first after stopping? This is common? Is it something that can be fixed?

FYI, McMaster Carr has the correct J.I.S. spec philips screws. correct heads/finish/threads.

You can get out of first, it's just hard to find neutral without going straight to 2nd. I find it's worse when the engine is hot. Its a common problem with the CB77, caused by a little clutch drag. I really haven't tinkered much with mine but you might be able to make it better by adjusting the clutch and also making sure a bent lever isn't limiting the travel. You should be able to find neutral easily when rolling ~5mph or so. Never saw that JIS screw section in McMaster - Good call!

Finding the 6x115 in a phillips is tough, so I ended up using the socket heads instead. and cut to length.

Z1 enterprizes and some others will sell individual screws, and this vendor shows complete sets,,,although I haven't tried them myself

Thanks all for the help and info. I searched around the web and found an OEM replacement bolt on ebay and it was $30 plus $18 for shipping!! I searched outside of ebay and found some aftermarket ones for around $4 with $10 shipping. But I noticed that the bolt didn't look like the bolt that came off my bike. I got the part # from the parts book, but mine is a long phillips head screw and the one from the parts book looks like a bolt with a nut on the end. I don't know if a previous owner replaced it with this screw or maybe the 1962 model used this bolt instead of the other bolt? I'm not sure what to order now. I checked out McMasters and they seem to have a zillion bolts on there and I'm not sure what the thread measurements are for this bolt. Below is a pic of the bolt that was on the bike and a pic of the replacement part bolt. Any help would be appreciated!
