mix and match case halves

Post by rrietman » Mon Oct 24, 2011 2:59 pm

are there any issues with swapping case halves? working on engine #CL72E 341264 and I have some old nasty weld repairs on the lower, however I do want that engine# to go in the bike I am working on. I built a bunch of these engines but always have used matching cases. I have lots of extra cases to pick from--- here are two I pulled out to look at---CL77E 1043281(some casting differences, but the important stuff matches up) CB72E 213911(castings match, but I would rather preserve this case for a future job) I have more CL/CB/dream cases to pick over.
I know if I was building a VW or Porsche motor I would not consider this kind of swap without an align bore.
Thanks
Randy

I had to use two different cases, the bottom was from a '62 cb72 and the top case half from a '63 cb77
it has had no problems at all.

thank you LM, this is as would have thought given the design with roller bearings throughout. any engine using shell bearings I think would be quite a different story.
BTW I will be traveling in your parts next month and was thinking it might be fun to put a face with a name if you are up for a visit.
Thanks
Randy
