Lost the kick start and starter. Advice please (cb77)

Post by cstbikes » Sat Mar 10, 2018 2:09 pm

So last year I got bike drunk and paid way too much for what I've come to realize is a beautiful money/time pit. I'm fairly new to old Hondas and seller assured me that it was normal to need to find the sweet spot to engage the kickstart and for the starter to sound like poop. Now I realize that he was a lying sack of crap and I'm facing a major tear down to fix this bike. I'm just looking for some preliminary advice. Based on what I've read I can see I probably need to split the cases to fix the kickstarter and I need to rebuild my starter clutch. Are these jobs feasible for a novice with reasonable mechanical abilities. Do I need to spend hundreds on special tools just to this? Are all the parts I will need available? Should I just fix the starter and live without the kickstart?

So far all I have does is remove the side covers and buy the factory manual which I found was not nearly as helpful as I'd hoped. What would you guys do?

Hi

Like you I bought a bike last year that was not as described for too much money and ended up with a load of problems including the electric start and kick start. I Am no expert but there are really knowledgeable and helpful people on the forum and most of the issues have be covered if you look back st the posts.
For the electric start David Silver stocks the parts in the UK ( where are you?) and you only need to remove the generator/rotor. The main problem I had was the bolts holding the starter clutch mechanism to the back of the rotor sheared so I had to drill them out so all the swarf stuck to the rotor but in principal it is not difficult. Mine works fine now ( though it does squeal a bit).
For the kickstart , first thing to check is that it has been lined up correctly when you refit the side case. Mine had actually been reassembled incorrectly internally so I did need to strip down but I would read the posts on how to assemble first .. essentially line up the ‘0’ Mark’s on the cogs after fully rotating the shaft.

Thanks, I've been reading through the "proper kickstart" thread to see if I'm missing something but my gut tells me I have internal issues the way it only sometimes engages. I'll see if I can figure it out though.

I'm not extremely experienced, but I've done both the clutch for the electric start and the kick start. Neither are very complicated, but the kick start will require that you drop the engine, flip it over and remove the bottom crankcase. The culprit there will be either the teeth are shot on the kickstart gear teeth inside first gear on the secondary shaft and/or the kickstart pawl and it's spring and cap are worn. Since you've asked for opinions, I would suggest that you repair the starter clutch first, then worry about the kick start when you've gained some confidence and have been able to ride your new bike a bit. You'll need a rebuild kit, which is available at David Silver Spares https://www.davidsilverspares.com/CB77-305/part_36953/ or from Classic Honda Restoration http://www.classichondarestoration.com/ ... -cb77.html . Kits are also normally available from Scrambler Cycle, but they're currently out of stock. You can sometimes find them on ebay too. The hardest part of the job is getting to the starter clutch - You'll have to remove the starter to remove the rotor and the right crankcase cover screws can be a bear. You'll also need a tool to pull your rotor if you don't have one already. https://scrambler-cycle.myshopify.com/c ... rh-threads. It's really not difficult and it's just an afternoon job. Ask questions if you need to.

Thanks for the links, I'm planning to focus on the electric start and hopfully enjoy hte bike a little this summer.
