Vin & Engine Number

Post by Clifton5249 » Wed Feb 22, 2017 9:29 am

I purchased what was listed on the title as a 1963 305 Dream, but while trying to check the vin number(CA78 1023619) it appears to be older? The engine number is C77E 1023716, any help on determining the true year would be gladly appreaciated,

Honda went to the 7 digit VIN in 1965, so by the VIN you're giving the oldest it could be is 1965, not 1963. Honda did not keep specific records of the 7 digit VIN numbers by breakdown for 1965-1966-1967. Also the bikes were titled in the year they were sold so sometimes when you are comparing VIN numbers with titled year it can get confusing. The wiring harness has a white manufactures tag with the year the harness was produced and sometimes that helps. Someone else may be able to help carbon date your VIN to a specific year, 1965 or 1966.

This bike came out of West Virginia into Kentucky and it is the only Vintage Honda that I have seen titled by the engine number and not the frame number. I can see where the person I bought it from would have told the people at the Courthouse anything. Well thank you for the information, it is helpful. Not sure what to do about title, I guess I'll let me Harley riding son worry about it when I am gone. Thanks again, Charlie
