Removing and replacing studs

Post by Tim Allman » Sat Dec 17, 2016 12:15 pm

Can someone fill me in on the correct method or tool to use to R&R studs? I'm referring to the big ones that hold the top end together as well as the smaller ones such as the exhaust and carb studs.

Thanks,
Tim

I bought a tool at my NAPA dealer which is apx. 3 inch round, has a place for a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and a hole for the stud to go through.
You put the tool over the stud and when you turn it with the ratchet a wheel grabs the stud.
I caution you the the 2 outer front studs can/will break at times. ....................lm

I have a set of stud removal 'sockets' like this.

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/laser-s ... 0wodB7kD5Q

Inside each 'socket' is a one-way roller clutch (like the starter clutch) which grips the stud without marking it. They work best on parallel studs so do=nt work so well on those outer waisted ones.

Evening Graham,

Yes I have a couple of those too, they work as well as anything I've come across.

Gave the CL an outing this morning, a bit chilly (4 c) but had a good run into the Peak District for lunch about 70 miles in all!

Envious....

Just got back from my latest US trip. Spent the day putting up Christmas lights, washing cars and shopping. Maybe some bike fun later next week......

Low tech way is two nuts jammed together, remove using lower nut. Depends on how tight they are in the case whether it will work or not.
