Cam Chain Tensioner

Post by NBD925 » Sun Mar 30, 2014 10:58 pm

Did all Honda Dreams come with a Left Hand adjust Cam Chain Tensioner originally? I see allot of Right Hand Adjustable tensioners and not very many Left hand ones especially on ebay being sold as Dream Tensioners.

It makes sense to me that the Dream would have a Left hand Adjustment Bolt (Bolt and Nut are on Left Side of Tensioner) Because once the clam shells are attached, the right hand clam shell stays screwed to the engine while the left side comes off. That would make a left hand adjustment tensioner easier to use.

I also see in the owners manual Page 32 Figure 24 shows this left hand adjuster.

What gives? Did some Dreams come with right hand ones?

I have seen Left hand cam chain adjustment bolts on the tensioners of both early Dreams and early CB77s into 1962. I imagine the same applies to Scramblers too.

Did Honda switch to right hand tensioners on the later dreams? I have two early dreams and they both seem to have the left hand tensioners like you say.

What are most people seeing on there late dreams?

The design was changed sometime in 1964 from what I find in a CB77 parts book.
My other books for C/CA/CL72/77 don't show a engine number for the change.
I've looked through my HONDA parts change books and don't find any data.
I have always thought the change from left to right was due to the exhaust pipes and leg shields on the CL72 bikes making adjustment difficult. ........lm

My 1963 titled, 1962 manufactured CB77 had the left-hand adjustment. Moving the adjustment bolt to the right, sure made it more convenient to be able to rotate the crank and adjust the tensioner from the same side of the bike. Chase

Does any one have an original (that they know) dream with a right hand tensioner adjustment?

I was under the impression that all dreams had the left hand adjuster.
