1962 CA77 with Later Engine?

Post by motogearhead » Mon Feb 03, 2014 9:12 pm

Greetings. I'm new here because I recently brought home a 1962 CA77. I was led to believe the bike was original...but based on info on this site, the engine serial number looks like it my be later. Frame serial number is 10736 and the engine is 1009028. Also, the points cover on the head has "Type 1" on it.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

I added a pic of the bike...just because they're fun to look at!

Hi

Beautiful find!

Numbers suggest that this would be a 1961 bike or perhaps a 1960. I have a 1960 C77 with numbers :

Engine C77E-A10269
Frame C77- A10268

This was the forerunner of the CA77 and this style of number was only used for 1960

The chart below seems a bit confused but I think 1961 is right for your bike unless you have and "A" at the front of the number.

Are the tops of your rear shocks metal or plastic?

Please send some more pictures of the handlebar mirror mounts and rear light. Your engine would appear to be 1964-on. Th e1960 - 1961 engines had a lot of differences. There would have been a breather tower at the top left rear of the crankcases.

G,

7-digit frame/engine numbers started in 1965.
