Honda CB77- Risks of oil overfilling

Post by akpasta » Wed Oct 02, 2013 9:56 pm

Hello,

I put a bit too much oil in my superhawk tonight a bit above the max fill line. Should I drain it or is it okay to overfill a bit? Def don't want to blow any oil seals or anything.

Thanks,

Andy

Andy, how much is "a bit too much"? If you think it is too much, just unscrew the drain plug a little bit and let the excess oil drip out until you reach the desired volume. There is a chance that leaving the level high and driving the bike could create a lot more work and spend a lot more money to correct this minor error. You could also just drain the oil into a clean container, button the bottom end back up and then add the correct amount. I think most of us would not take the chance of operating the bike with excess oil. Just my thoughts on the issue.

Ya, I'll just drain some, better safe than sorry. I was just curious what *could* happen. Thanks!

You are just sloshing more oil than you need to inside the engine causing more drag as the crank and clutch rotates in it. This 'could' cause the oil to foam and then restrict the flow into the pump.

I know of an apprentice who, when asked to fill a car engine with oil, emptied a whole 5 gallon drum into it.....

It would be an interesting experiment but better if someone else does it.

You don't need to be sorry.
You are correct with both.
Debris is a normal/usual reply which most are aware of so I asked the NON OBVIOUS question.
Most are not aware that other than debris the screen dissipates the foam which is at that location in route to the oil pump.
You aren't aware that when questions are asked and we/you are one with the answer sit back and allow others to consider the question and offer their thoughts.
I've noticed there are many members who over time have come forward with the correct replies and have/will become PROFESSORS as they work with each other to gain knowledge of these bikes and didn't learn only because I answered the easy questions but watch as they discuss things among themselves. That said I will get in there if the subject answers are headed incorrectly. The forum now has many almost PROFESSORS as they have observed the forum and have learned well. Those members know who they are and I'd like to think I've added to their knowledge and their enjoyment of these bikes I love. ..................lm
