Lubing oil seals?

Post by FiremanBob » Wed Jun 05, 2013 3:01 pm

In searching on sealers to be used I saw a post from LM saying he lubes the inner surfaces of oil seals. which product should I use for this? My first thought was to use some Syl-Glide, a high-temp, very viscous grease that I use on brake parts. But if you refuse even to consider it, then you're like the child who has never tasted broccoli and swears that he never will.

Also, since my nearest Honda dealer is over an hour away, is there a Permatex product that will work as well as Hondabond for sealing the crankcases?

I plan to reassemble the cases by this weekend, so help is much appreciated.

A drop of motor oil or a dab of your favorite grease will be fine, anything is preferable to assembling it dry. Permatex No.1 would work well on the crankcase joint, the downside is it's a little messy, and hard to clean up any excess that oozes out.

Threebond 1194 (Or 1104 if you can find it anymore) will be good for the case sealing. It's the same as all the Hondabond 4, Yamabond 4 products, but from the manufacturer, not from the dealer. As far as the lubing of the inner surfaces of the seals, I think the reference is in regards to the lips that seal around the respective shafts, not the inward facing flat side of the seal.
