Clicking coming from the engine....

Post by aerojack7654 » Thu May 02, 2013 9:31 pm

Hi folks,
With a final push, I got my SuperHawk back together and running (picture below). As you may have noticed, it's not exactly stock, the unrestored bike had been pretty heavily butchered, chopped parts with multiple coats of paint (gold and magenta on top of the original black, then back to black), so rather than go for the stock look, I cleaned up some of the mangled parts and stayed with black and chrome, thus the BlackHawk...
Anyway, the motor is running beautifully, I have run it around the neighborhood and it really pulls cleanly with surprising power (especially compared to my Dream, but ya'll already knew that). I put a Sachse electronic ignition on it, no points or advance springs (yay!), but a fairly loud clicking can be heard when running at a constant speed. The clicking goes away on accel or decell, or when I pull the clutch in, which probably makes it a clutch or transmission thing - so I probably posted in the wrong section, but hopefully someone will recognize the behavior. The clicking is not at the engine speed but slower, and is quite pronounced, which is disconcerting, especially since it's running so nice, i really want to ride it, but don't want to trash something that's about to go.
Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jack

The 'blackhawk' looks cool!

Hey Jensen,
How are things in Netherlands - I hope that the weather there is good for riding, I had some guys in Amsterdam a few weeks ago, still cool and wet!
I'm using the #2 advance curve that Sachse provides, which is apparently close to stock(?). I haven't experimented with any of the others - any suggestions?
Regards,
Jack

Thanks akpasta, it was a challenge because so may of the parts had been "boogered" by previous owner(s). Stuff like the wiring harness was useless it had been hacked so much, none of the lights even wired, the only way to start was kick start, the start button not even there, horn and headlight switches empty of mechanical parts, lots of inappropriate fasteners, i.e., SAE, threaded pieces messed up - the whole nine yards. It had not been registered since the 80s, but at least the engine was free and is running nicely now - with the exception of the clicking...

Also, some other possibly important observations about the clicking, it seems to increase in frequency with road speed, not RPM. The noise seemed to be coming from the right side of the motor, although that is hard to tell while at speed with a helmet on.

Does the kick starter work normally? It could be the ratchet mechanism.

Hi,

Check the rear wheel chain, does it hit the engine or other parts somewhere ? Check especially for wear at the rivet joint.

Curve nr. 4 for breaking in, curve 8 after 1000 km or so. Curve 8 is more aggressive and a maximum per-ignition of 39 degrees instead of 34 degrees.

Yesterday nice and sunny, we went to the beach, to cold to swim, but warm enough to have fun, here a pic of my sons playing on the beach.
