Oil Filter Cap Removal

Post by Rickytic » Wed Feb 13, 2013 2:11 pm

Did a search on removing the oil filter cap after removing the clip...Did not find any help.

Restoring a Cl77 and as the left side case cover is off for painting, decided to clean the oil filter. I removed the filter and chain, removed the clip, and tried to remove the cap from the filter barrel....No luck. I cleaned a little crud from around the clip groove but still so luck. I tried to go in from the back side with a screw driver and remove the cap as you would do with a wheel bearing, no luck. I didnt want to put too much pressure on the cap, so I didn't tap it too hard, didn't want to risk breaking the metal. Any tried and true methods on removing the cap would be appreciated. Maybe I just didn't tap it hard enough.

Thanks in advance for your helpful response.

Drift punch from the backside.

Thanks Dave, guess I was not tapping it hard enough. Just need to coax it a little more! Maybe the drift punch will give me more contact surface than a screw driver? Will try it and report back.

Davo, thanks again for the tip. Just went to the shop, used a drift punch, a little hammer, then a bigger hammer, and finally the top came out (in one piece I might add). Boy! sure glad I decided to take the filter apart, there was a quarter inch of dried particles caked onto the inside edge of the barrel. Used an exacto knife to lift it off, and then used Lacquer thinner to finnish the cleaning. Wire burshed the edge of the top and inside surface of the barrel, lubed the O-ring and surfaces with a light coat of grease and it went back together with ease. Thanks again for the tip, was just afraid of breaking the cap with too much pressure but not anymore.

Now on to the clutch cleaning...Need to get hold of Ed Moore again so he can remind me of the cleaning media he uses, getting old, can't remember what he told me....He will probably kick my butt for being forgetful...I can take though. Sure do like that old man, my kinda guy.

Must have been seized up pretty good. Mine always came out real easy. The funny thing is the first time I ever cleaned the filter (this is on a rebuilt engine so it's not 45+ years of gunk) was after 3,000 miles and there was hardly any gunk in there at all. Makes ya wonder.
