Replacing the cam chain

Post by Jlovvorn » Fri Nov 30, 2012 5:42 pm

Quick question, when reassembling the top end, do I just connect the new cam chain to the old chain using the old master link, then crank it through the bike with the rotor bolt until the link comes back around, disconnect the old link and old chain, and then button up the new chain with the new master link?

Keeping in mind I need to line up the sprocket and all that stuff as part of the final assembly.

J - That will work, and like you say, make sure the cam and rotor are lined up before you button it up. Stuff rags around the sprocket to keep the chain in place and to keep any pieces of the master link from dropping into the crankcase. If the unthinkable happens and that sucker gets away from you and tinkles down to the cellar, you can remove the oil pump to retrieve it. That's never happened to me but that's what I'd do if it did ;)

Thanks. I will post an update tomorrow which will either be a victory or a crushing defeat.

I'm sure you'll do fine. If you get stuck or have questions of an immediate nature, feel free to give me a call.
