Header lip gone

Post by Dana01 » Wed Apr 20, 2011 1:36 pm

1966 CB77:

I just noticed one of my header pipes is missing the 1/4" lip that seats against the crush ring. The edge is jagged. I can smooth out the edge, but is it even ok to use that header? I wonder how well it will seal/compress against the crush ring. Compression loss, blow-by, etc.

It won't seal Dana! I have welded a large washer on the end before and ground to size.

Thanks bud! I thought of that ... let me see if ebay has anything decent first.

Thanks Scram.

I think Fred may have a header for me. Of course if I can finish wrestling the old one out ... OMG! this thing is frozen all to hell.

Edit: finally got it out after 2 days of soaking, pounding and using a sawzall to carefully cut away pieces from the muffler inner wall.

I'm curious to know if the above method of repair worked? I have the same issue on both headers, and am on a budget so its a no go on new ones.
Thanks.

Sorry Foosneb. I got a replacement header which fits nicely. I don't have a TIG, so I'm not sure how good I could do a slice on my MIG. It would probably look sloppy :(
