Please help me with lower end assembly. pics included

Post by big-b » Mon Mar 28, 2011 9:02 pm

Please try to bear with me this is my first engine build and i'm sure i might ask some dumb questions. I have both Bill Silvers Guides which are very helpful but i still have a few questions. I will try to keep all my lower end questions to this post.

Are these gear shift forks excessivly worn? Do they need to be replaced?

Can you shed some light on the lower case nuts and bolts, my parts manual does not show these accurately. Should all the washers be sealing washers? It looks like i have a mix of nut styles, my parts manual doesn't show hex nuts and it shows 2 of the funky sealing nuts. What should i be using here to avoid leaks?

I have a new set of oils seals on the way, in the Bill Silvers guide it says to use a light coat of sealer on the outside half and oil on the seal lip surfaces. What type of sealer are they talking about and what do they mean by the outside half? I assume the seal lip surfaces would be the ID that the shaft goes through?

Thanks for the help, the answers to these questions should get me started, by the way here are my freshly cleaned and bead blasted cases and a pic of the bike waiting for the engine.

The ends of your shift forks look ok to me. Just make sure they aren't bent.

The forks look good and as they are cast with brittle metal they will ware but I have yet to see a bent one.
Ya will find one aluminum 6mm washer and the rest are normal steel washers except for the 8mm ones at the front where the cap nuts were.
They used the thicker (zinc plated copper) washers.
I never put any slickum or oil on the edges of the seals but do on the seal lips.
I have several friends on this forum who have put Permatex or similar stuff on the edges and after tightening the cases they had the seals come out.
One feller was riding and got a really oily bike and right leg.
I use HONDABOND 4 or YAMABOND 4 between the upper and lower cases. ......lm

Thanks Guys.

LM the 6mm washer you are talking about must be the one that seems to be stuck to the funky shaped nut. I guess i need a new funky shaped nut and 6mm crush washer?

LM When you say you put oil on the seal lips, what part of the seal are you referring to?

Thank You,

Brian
