sticky valve??

Post by hoodooman » Wed Mar 23, 2011 5:31 pm

hi fellas,
i've got a 68 honda dream. recently, i installed a new cam chain and a complete oil seal and gasket kit. the motor was freshened with a hone and new rings about 2,000 miles ago. i ride the bike frequently and have never had any trouble with it. i recently just wanted to fix a pesky oil leak, and while i was in there i figured i'd put in a new cam chain to replace my old noisy one. i also adjusted the valve clearances.

my problem:
when i rev the bike at a stand still, i can hear a loud "tick tick tick tick" as the rpm's come down after the rev. also, while on the highway, the bike is not making the power it should, and it will hit a wall at 65mph. on takeoff, it bogs under it's own weight. the timing has been adjusted (correctly, i believe) and the carb has been rebuilt as well. my thought is that it could be a sticky valve.

any ideas? help is appreciated. also, if it IS probably a sticky valve, where can i get new valves and valve springs? can my local napa machine shop clean the valve's and valve seats? should i replace the valve springs? as i stated the bike ran flawlessly before, with the exception of a noisy camchain and a pesky oil leak. i'm very disappointed that after i fixed these problems, now i have this loud ticking noise and powerband problem!! thanks for any help.

also, could i run seafoam through the gas/carburetor, or in the oil sump to possibly clean the valve seats, etc. and possibly clear up the problem? or is this a bad idea?

Hi,

You say you replaced the cam chain, but are you sure that the timing (of the cam's toward the crank) is correct ?, could it be one tooth off timing (or more) ?
