LEAKING A TUN OF OIL BEHIND POINTS, FOUND SOMETHING....

Post by hillhudson » Sat Mar 05, 2011 9:06 pm

Hey all, so i know there is a thread somewhere here about leaking oil at the points mount but i couldn't find it to post this. i almost started my enigne a while ago before a huge amount of oil start pouring out from behind the points. i thought it was deffinitely a seal that needed replacement but i looked behind the points today and found somthing that doesn't look right. this is my only cb77 so i don't have references to look at, take a look at the picture below, i circled a huge gouge thats in the top end cam mount. i am not entirely sure, but i think the oil was gushing from there. does this look normal ? maybe i had a bad gasket on the points bracket...

just to let you all know, this bike has been sitting for a long time and i intend to restore it, but of course i had to see if it would start.

thanks,

-hill

That's the way they are cast. If the oil is spewing out behind the points housing it's because the cover/housing is not flat against the gasket.

It could be the cam is slightly separated so the bearings are now too far out, or a torn gasket. Try bolting the end cover/housing back on without teh gasket but don't overdo it. See if there's a gap between the head and housing and if so try to determine why.

I had a motor once in which the points housing would not sit down until we machined some off the "nose" where it pushes on the cam bearing.

phew! i'm so glad that the top end isn't trashed. i was almost sure the guy i bought it from hacked it up trying to do a half assed rebuild. thanx so much for the input, that a load off my shoulders, i tried seating the points mount flat against the engine case and it does have something preventing it from being flush, and also a trashed gasket.

thanx a TON teazer!
