Engine Break In Period

Post by britman » Mon Dec 22, 2008 5:52 am

Since it is the time of the season when some of us are completing the winter projects I thought it might be a good time to seek the opinions of on some of our experienced wrench turners on the best break in procedures to follow on a new engine rebuild. I know it has been brought up before and I have seen varying opinions, from running it hard several times and letting it cool down completely to seat the rings to taking it easy for the first 500 miles. I have always been a believer in the slow break in approach with a oil change after the first 100 miles if not sooner. Comments?

I like to run a few heat cycles, let it get good and warmed up, and then let it cool off completely. If only piston abd rings are new, not crank bearings, they will seat in usually in a hundred miles. I like to vary the rpms, not going above 6000 for the first 25 miles or so, and not riding at any rpm for too long, and then gradually start building up revs. Oil change after 100 miles is a good idea, flush out the assembly lube and contaminates from rebuild.
