gas in the oil

Post by Rick Green » Thu Aug 21, 2008 7:55 pm

I just purchased my 67 Dream (Mom said no when i was 16 in 1967) I got the engine running and tuned up before putting it to the road I changed the oil. Seems the old oil was dark but smelled like fuel was in the oil. I just got back from my first 5 miles and checked no signs of fuel in oil yet. Has anyone ever experanced this before? Hate to drive it to much and have the engine lockup.

Thanks Rick

Rick, that usally occurs if float level is too high, or float needle is worn out and petcock is left in on position when parked. Basically the fuel from the carb runs down the intake, floods the cylinder, and ends up in the crankcase. This will aslo cause the bike to run rich. If you're confident that none of these conditions exist, then I say ride it!
