noisy top end, right side. need advice

64 cb77 305 superhak

the other day the bike started to make odd rattle and clanging from the right side when it idled. you rev it up and it slowly goes away. as the engine comes back to an idle the odd (non rhythmic) noise comes back. this seems to manifest itself after the bike warms up. valves are good. timing is right. carbs are in sync. after reading and searching, i think there may be a problem with the piston pin clips (small end of the rod), or cam sprocket rivets, or advance mechanisms rivets. i am afraid to ride the bike for fear of causing further damage.

1. should i keep the bike off the road?
2. do i need to pull the top end apart to diagnose the problem?
3. assuming it is one of the above mentioned problems, will i need anything other than a gasket kit, pin and new clips?
4. will i need to pull the crank case apart to machine the small end of the rod.

one last quick question, do the cam shafts open the intake (left and right) valves at exactly the same time or are they offset by a few degrees? mine open one after the other, is it possible to put the cam shafts in improperly or are they notched to avoid problems? are left and right cams interchangeable?

any help would be great.

thanks
