Splitting Crankshaft on CB77?

Post by rappaj17 » Sat May 31, 2008 11:43 am

I had the ends of my rods honed out to fit oversized (15.1mm) piston pins and i also had the pistons honed to fit these oversized pins. The engine shop oversized one of the rods a little too much. Now I have a tough situation on my hands.

I have an extra crankshaft with one good rod on it and was hoping I could split that crankshaft, bring that rod to the engine shop to honed to the right size, and then swap it with the bad rod on my crankshaft. The only question I have is - How do i split the crank? Everything seems pressed together. Has anyone had success doing this?

My other option (and more expensive one) is to buy a used crank w/ good rods and buy another new set of pistons.

I really need to know if its possible to split the crank even if it is a difficult job. I just need to know if its possible. Thanks

Rapp, I don't believe they come apart. There is one this morning on E-Bay complete with pistons and rods.

Hi Rapp

They do come apart but I wouldn't attempt it myself, it needs to be done by an engineering
firm who are used to dealing with pressed up motorcycle crankshafts.
I took 4 cranks to Alpha Bearing here in the UK and came away with 1 rebuilt crank ( all new
bearings ) and 2 good rods .. the rest was too worn to be economical to repair .. it wasn't cheap.

Problem with buying a used crank unseen would be knowing what state it was in.

good luck

Phil
