Please help on CB77 vin numbers

Post by dux66 » Wed Apr 02, 2008 6:18 pm

I have two CB77 engines. I would like to rebuild one of them I was interested if one would be better then the other according to the vin
CB77E-1028958
CB77E-1009317

Not sure what year these engines are from. Any help in decoding the vins would be great. And would there be a problem mixing the parts between these 2 engines?
This engine will be installed in CL77 scrambler superhawk mix so matching numbers is not a requirment.
Thanks for all the help

Both engines are 65-67. I believe all parts should be interchangeable. Honda did change several internal parts, but it seems to be after serial # 1050999.Root diameter of crank spline increased from 21 to 23mm, as well as primary sprocket. Right crank bearing outer race modified to use straight knock pin. Cylinder and cam chain tensioner modified to use narrower, 32mm, as opposed to 41mm wide tensioner. Clutch center and transmission root diameters 28mm, up from 25.5mm on countershaft, 23mm up from 20.8mm mainshaft. Camshaft outer spline diameters increased from 19mm to 20mm, as well as advance unit. These are the major things to look out for. If you do want matching numbers, you need only to find a CL77 upper crack case, they do come up often on ebay. All parts from CB77 will work in CL77 cases.
